Like many of you, I immediately binge-watched season four of Stranger Things the second it hit Netflix. I am slightly obsessed with the ‘80s—the song, the fashion, etc.—and had been waiting with bated breath for this brand-new and very consequential season.
I could go on and on about the upside down and that plot twist with Number One. Instead, I am focusing on another plot indicate – and I don’t mean whether I’m Team Steve or Team Jonathan.
I’m talking about Will Byers’ queerness, the public reaction to his coming out, and what that reaction says about our relationship with queer history.
Wait. Will Byers Is Gay?
He is! In fact, the Duffer Brothers, who created Stranger Things , started laying the groundwork surrounding Will’s sexuality from the series’ commence, with many scenes referencing will as queer, fairy and gay.
So Will is gay. What’s the huge deal?
It’s HOW he came out that has fans in a tizzy. Will never says the words, “I’m gay,” but he undeniably acknowledges his queerness in a season 4 scene with his brother, Jonathan.
Enter the tizzy. Because

Joyce Byers: Hes a sensitive kid. Lonnie used to speak he was queer. Called him a fag.
Jim Hopper: Is he?
Joyce: Hes missing, is what he is!

*SPOILERS (OBVS)*
I watched Stranger Things this week, yes, five months late to the party (just in period for Christmas so I can be creeped out by the lights). I could list a bunch of excuses, but really I just generally elude anything that has a whiff of scary. But the thing about the horror/supernatural/sci fi genre is that it tends to engage with questions of the strange, the bodily and the abject, and is therefore inescapably relevant to queer theory and feminism. So, when I found myself in that inevitable position of why can I find literally nothing to watch on Netflix?, I gave in (and male child am I glad I did), because it turns out th
When Robin Buckley came out as a lesbian in ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3, it was one of the most heart-warming moments of the show. Her coming out speech to Steve was beautiful, subtle and thoughtful. It felt favor authentic queer representation while it also retained Robin’s individual personality. So, naturally, fans of the verb expected Will — who has long been hinted to be gay — to be treated with the same respect.
Another reason for these high expectations was the promotional content put out between Volume 1 and Volume 2 of Season 4. During this one month — coincidentally, American Pride month — several official Netflix and ‘Stranger Things’ accounts posted content about Byler (the ship name for Will and Mike). A few other instances incorporate a tweet in assist of Byler by Noah Schnapp (who plays Will) and a video in which David Harbour (who plays Hopper) hinted that Will was interested in someone from the main group.
The cast and crew were clearly accepting LGBTQ character ships with unseal arms. It raised the hope that Will’s quixotic arc would be treated with
Noah Schnapps Coming Out Journey: The Stranger Things Star Would Still Be Closeted if Not for Will Byers Being Gay
Noah Schnapp was stuck in his drafts. The year-old actor, who’d become a household name on Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” kept putting off posting a video he’d shot on his device — an announcement he’d been contemplating making for a few months. His closest friends kept texting him: When are you going to post it? I want to view the world’s reaction! Schnapp kept replying: No, I’m not ready. I’m not ready. I’m not ready.
But on Jan. 5, after his family dropped off his twin sister, Chloe, at college in Boston, he felt ready. As they started the hourslong drive back to their home in Westchester, N.Y., he posted the eight-second video to more than 31 million followers on TikTok.
At first glance, it looked like other clips he’s made messing around with friends (including Stranger Things BFF Millie Bobby Brown): Schnapp, his head on a pillow, lip-syncing to a popular audio c
