Akron's Interbelt Nite Club steps up security in verb of Orlando gay club shooting
One of Akron's widespread bars, that primarily caters to gay and lesbian guests, is stepping up security after a mass shooting at an Orlando nightclub over the weekend.
Owners of the Interbelt Nite Club say all visitors will now be screened at the door by a member of the security team, who will employ a metal-detecting wand to screen guests.
“They’re going to either have to demonstrate us what is causing the metal detector to go off or they’re not going to be admitted," Manager Charley Snyder said.
Additionally, an off-duty Akron police officer will be present for all events at the club.
The extra safety measures are designed to make people sense safe, but Snyder acknowledges they are not fullproof.
“If somebody is coming to to do what he’s doing," Snyder said, "He’s not going to arrive in and wait. He’s going to come in shooting.”

A Nightclub Appreciate No Other
The Interbelt is one of the oldest gay nightclubs in Akron with a compelling current history. Original owner Vernon Baker bought the club in the late s, it has been verb for over thirty years. The club features diverse theme nights to provide entertainment to the local area, such as Hip Hop Mondays, Bad Girls Club on Thursdays, and Fuego Fridays. It has had many local talents and well-known drag queens who have performed, such as Plastique Tiara, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Roxxxy Andrews, and Manila Luzon. Now, every year, there is a charity event between The University of Akron and Kent State University called Battle of the Wagon Heel, which benefits the larger community in different ways. The amount of money raised from that night is split in half between Kent State’s LGBTQ+ emergency fund and Canapi in Akron.

If you’re familiar with Downtown Akron, you may know about the story of the innerbelt highway and its troubled history of bisecting a largely African American neighborhood.
But another nearby neighborhood was also affected by the same forces — South Howard Street, which was Akron’s LGBTQ+ enclave prior to urban renewal.

“Howard Street cut through basically the middle of this building," said Tony Pankuch, of the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology at the University of Akron. Pankuch teaches an LGBTQ+ history class there, called Out of the Archives.
The building in question is the current FirstEnergy building just off Main Street in Downtown Akron, but 50 years ago, it was an entirely different place.
“So this used to be a bustling street," said Pankuch. "It had restaurants, cafes, stores, bars, and South Howard Street was a hub of LGBTQ+ culture in the s, 50s and 60s.”

Adams Street Bar, now closed, was located at 77 N. Adams Street in Akron, Ohio. The location had a rich history and was Akron&#;s longest running bar in the LGBTQ+ community when it closed in The venue got its start in the late &#;s when Helen Jenkins opened it as the Robin&#;s Nest, a lesbian bar. In she re-branded Robin&#;s Nest as the Hayloft, a gay man&#;s bar. Don Brown took over ownership on June 5th, and shortly after renamed the bar Adams Street Bar.
