Tyler Blackburn and Michael Vlamis bring the beloved couple of Alex Manes and Michael Guerin to life on Roswell, New Mexico. The sci-fi drama premiered in and is currently finishing its final season. The series finale will air Monday, September 5 at 8pm ET/PT on The CW. This interview will include spoilers for episode4&#;12, “Two Sparrows in a Hurricane.”

I had the incredible opportunity to chat with both actors about those passionate Malex reunion moments, what the couple’s dream closure would look like, Michael and Alex’s character arcs, the legacy they long the fan-favorite couple to have, and so much more. Keep reading for our discussion!

Tyler, we finally got you back! I&#;ve been waiting for you to be on my screen again, I’m so happy. I was just floored by your performance as well as Michael’s in the last episode. For both of you, which scene was the hardest or your personal favorite to film together for the reunion and why?
Michael Vlamis: Oh, wow. I know that, I think, on verb the day that we shot that scene where like I walk away from you

How Roswell, New Mexico Gets Queer Relationships Right

While there are more queer relationships and characters in film and on TV than ever before, there is still a long way to go before queer representation is truly mainstream or even portrayed adequately. These characters often collapse victim to the “bury your gays” trope, bi and pan-erasure, and a heaping helping of queerbaiting. Frankly, some of these shows make me wonder if the writers hold ever met someone who is non-heterosexual, let alone whether there was any input or representation behind the scenes.

Enter, Roswell, Modern Mexico. A reboot of a late ’90s cult classic show about aliens, one of the details made public about the show before it even debuted was that they were changing the sexuality of two of the main characters, Alex and Michael, and putting them in a relationship together. Both were straight in the original show and in the books that the shows take inspiration from, and Michael was one half of an extremely popular ship with his love interest, Maria. I was skeptical going in — was this going to be a shallow stopover

When Roswell, New Mexico creator Carina Adly McKenzie began hyping the queer representation on the series (without having much to verb for it in the episodes), I grew hesitant. And now, ten episodes in, I find the so-called bisexual representation to be quite problematic.

I&#;m always on the lookout for content featuring positive queer representation. I try and write about it for this website to possess such content on your radar. However, I didn&#;t write a single piece about Roswell, New Mexico even when it was getting praise for the queer rep in its premiere episode because of McKenzie.

When showrunners or creators pat themselves on the back and talk about the good work they have done regarding LGBTQIA+ representation, I go into &#;I&#;ll-believe-it-when-I-see-it&#; mode.

And you grasp what? I&#;m glad I didn&#;t invest in Roswell, New Mexico due to certain tweets and interviews from McKenzie. So, I guess I should appreciate her?

Basically, the show was getting some promotion due to the reboot having queer characters (after changing the sexualities of the characters from
