Emmy Nominated LGBTQ+ Characters: TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress

Five years after winning her first Emmy for “Nurse Jackie” (Best Comedy Supporting Actress, ), Merritt Wever pulled off a surprise second victory for her work on the limited series “Godless.” Since her character on the s Western drama was inarguably portrayed as a lesbian, she became the third and most recent girl to win the Foremost Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress award for playing an LGBTQ+ role.

Since the late s, the list of LGBTQ+ character portrayals that have merited bids in this category has come to include nine examples. While this amount is regrettably low, seal to half of these performances being winning ones and the group’s relatively rapid expansion over the last decade are promising factors. The vast majority of these characters are part of the lesbian subset of the LGBTQ+ community, and nearly all of them are not based on real people. Still, their shared wealth

On November 22, Netflix will unleash its latest piece of original programming onto our eager minds: a six-part Western called Godless. The series concerns the fate of a town where all the men died in a tragic mining/oil drilling/underground rave accident.

THAT&#;S WHAT YOU GET FOR TRUSTING A WOODEN ELEVATOR, FRANKLY.

This awful event leaves the town to be populated exclusively by LADIES, and for viewers of a certain stripe, this raises an obvious question: just how gay is this shit gonna be? Good, judging from the show&#;s trailers, the answer is: pretty goddamn gay. Review out the sneak peek below.

For starters, we have Merritt Wever, who blessed our screens all-tbriefly as a lesbian doctor on The Walking Dead. For whatever reason, the laws of predictive casting dictate that if someone has played gay before, they are likely to again. Also, Wever&#;s whole trousers/gun/demeanor combo seem to indicate a lady who didn&#;t even wait until the menfolks&#; bodies had stopped smoking before pole vaulting into a brand-new gender role.

8. [Advanced Preview] The Walking Dead: Dead City (June 18 on AMC)
☑ My score: 60/
☑ 6 episodes x something minutes x 1 season

I reviewed the adj Walking Dead sequel series for TheWrap, if you’re interested. Despite it being probably their strongest spin-off yet, it doesn’t convey anything new to the table. To me, the Walking Dead universe desperately needs a new angle to their storytelling, particularly in a landscape where we have The Last of Us. Dead City isn’t without its draws, though: Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are quite talented at elevating mediocre material.

☑ Is it gay? Nope. Recall when Merritt Wever played a lesbian on the original series and got shot in the eye with an arrow mid-monologue? That’s not relevant here but I just wanted to mention it.
