Notes: First Introduced in and believed to be named after the total eclipse of that year; the distillery was founded in Fermented in oak vats (many distilleries now use stainless steel) using using water filtered through the islands coral geology (limestone aquifer) from of an almost ft serious well. A blend of rums, some of the blend is double distilled in copper pot stills and other parts distilled in a copper Coffey column still (a Coffey still is usually used for Irish Whiskey) - then aged in ex bourbon oak casks for various periods of day then blended to profile for each Mount Gay product so proportions of each distillate and the ages of each component may vary widely but it tastes the identical.

The case can be made that the first rum distilled for commercial export was most probably distilled upon the Island of Barbados. In fact, the tradition of producing rum on Barbados has been dated to the prior seventeenth century as there is evidence of small-scale distillation as early as The first recorded written usage of the pos ‘Rum Bullion’ appears on the Island in (This is the earliest recorded usage of the synonyms ‘Rum’ as it relates to the distilled spirit anywhere in the world.) Evidence dated to indicates that there were stills in use at the location which would later become The Mount Gay Plantation, and written evidence that a spirit called rum was produced at this site comes from the year This makes Mount Gay the earliest recorded commercial producer of rum in the world, and this also makes Mount Gay the oldest Rum Brand in the world. Mount Gay Silver. The term &#;silver&#; when referring to white rum is not commonly used in releases in the UK and Europe. It seems to be a US thing. I suppose calling it silver rum makes as much sense as calling it white. It&#;s neither after all &#; transparent rum if anything.
This rum from Mount Gay has proved quite difficult to find. For some (likely political/territorial) reason whilst Mount Gay&#;s other entry level rum &#; the gold Eclipse is widely accessible in the UK, no white (or silver) bottling is easily found.
Occasionally a store such as the Whisky Exchange may import a limited amount but it is very infrequent. In the end I decided to add this bottling onto an verb from Excellence Rhum in France.
It worked out fairly pricey. Just under £30 for a 70cl bottle. The ABV is 40%. If it were commercially available here in the UK I would predict it to retail at the same price as the Eclipse. It was previously called Eclipse Silver after all.
